In keeping with its leading role as a conservator of wildlife, the Bali Safari and Marine Park is proud to welcome three new members to its happy animal kingdom family.

The three healthy, newborn wild babies being lovingly cared for by the team of professional animal keepers at the Park are a white African rhinoceros, a giraffe and a hippopotamus.

Singo, the baby giraffe, is the offspring of Sophie (7 years) and Matadi (6 years) who roam the wide spaces of the African Section of the Park’s Safari Journey.

Pembe, the rare white rhino is the baby daughter of Hima (24 years) and Nelson (21) – more popularly known to animal keepers and visitors as Mr. and Mrs. Nelson, and was born on November 4, 2015.

Rounding out the trio of newborn animals is Maji, the male hippopotamus born to proud hippo mom Dita, on March 24, 2016.

All three babies were the result of a natural birthing process without any human intervention, with a team of expert veterinarians monitoring the entire process on close-circuit TV and ready to intervene if required.

Dr. Nimal Fernando, Manager Life and Science, at the Bali Safari and Marine Park explained the kind of difficulties encountered by his team in trying to propagate captive rare animal species: “Frankly, it’s not easy to get two African rhinos to mate.

‘Pembe’ is the first baby rhino born at the Park since ‘Hima’s’ arrival in Bali six years ago. For mating to occur, the male rhino must physically conquer his partner, a ritual that proved difficult for ‘Nelson’ who is several years younger than his mate.

To consummate the relationship between the two rhinos and cause ‘Hima’ to become pregnant the Bali Safari Team undertook a number of supporting strategies, including providing special nutritional enrichment to improve the fecundity of ‘Hima’ and ‘Nelson’.”

African white rhinos represent an endangered species, with the Bali Safari and Marine Park the only home to this rare animal on the entire Island. And, because such births are rare, news of the Park’s successful breeding of a baby rhino was welcomed as exciting news in conservation circles worldwide.

The birth of baby animals of every variety represents joyful news at the Park, with both the animal parents and the Park’s human family eager to introduce the “new kids on the Park” to a wider world.

If you would like to meet Singo and Pembe, they can be found everyday grazing with their proud parents on the motorized Safari Journey at the Park.

Meanwhile, the Park’s new baby hippopotamus is still receiving special care at the Park’s nursery, scheduled to join Bali Safari’s general population of animals in the near future.
